How we connect

Guess what? We’re still watching television!

Reports of the death of television have been greatly exaggerated. 42% of Australians still spend more than two hours a day in front of the box, while only 27% spend more than two hours a day of leisure time on the internet. Talking and socialising comes down the list at 20%, listening to the radio scores 19% and 18% spend more than two hours exercising. Even Generation Y's watch TV, with 35% still fitting in their two hours a day; a figure that climbs to 60% in Pre-Baby Boomers.

A surprising 38% of Pre-Baby Boomers spend two hours or more online on a typical day. Generation Xs seem to consume less television and spend less leisure time online than other generations. Email is what we do most online, followed by checking out information or news sites, checking prices and seeking educational information (30%). Just 23% report ‘often’ or ‘very often’ buying products online. The explosion of social networking is particularly marked for younger Australians, with 42% of Generation Y reporting that they ‘often’ or ‘very often’ use the internet for this purpose.
