A sporting nation?

Marginally less interesting than the weather.

As a topic of conversation, sport falls a long way behind family, money, current affairs – and even marginally behind the weather. While 22% of people frequently shoot the breeze about the weather, only 20% chat about sport. But the stereotypes might just be right. The figure rises to 28% for men and drops to just 13% for women.

When it comes to participation in sport and recreation we’re a nation of walkers, with 48% claiming to walk regularly. This is followed by swimming (18%), the gym (9%) and cycling (8%). Compared to the national average, Canberra is more likely to walk, Perth to swim, Brisbane to cycle, Melbourne to play tennis and Sydney to play soccer.
